Best Place in Groningen to Pet Cats and Chill

For anyone who is at least my acquaintance, it is no secret that I am a huge ‘cat person’. The truth is every time I encounter a kitten walking lazily on the street I cannot help but to stop and caress its fur until it gets bored with me and moves to the next human in the hope of receiving a little treat for its growling tummy.

I have heard before about this fantastic concept of ‘cat café’( that is a café where for reasons of stress-relieving the clients can order drinks and food while petting cats). However, I confess that even if I am a proudly declared fan of cats, I have never had the chance to visit one.

One day while surfing the ‘world wide web’ trying to find new places in Groningen to kill the time that I would otherwise spend stressfully waiting for the results of my final exams, I was lucky to find this oasis of joy called Kattencafé Op z’n kop.

Located on ‘Oude Ebbingestraat ‘, not so far from the heart of the city, this café is the shelter of ten cats that await to be petted and even adopted!

I decided to go on a sunny Friday morning, so I could enjoy a pleasant stroll until I reached ‘Kattencafé Op z’n kop’. When I had finally arrived, I was welcomed by one of the waitresses there with a kind smile and informed her that I had a reservation.

Meet the cats!

If you are interested in visiting this place I do recommend you to make one in advance as the number of tables is limited, and depending on your luck it may be crowded.

Anyhow, I ordered a coffee and a light toast bread with warm cheese, being pleased to notice that they have options for all types of diets, including vegan.

While waiting for my order, I carefully read the ‘House Rules’. One matter I appreciated in ‘Kattencafé Op z’n kop’ is that, as the poster next to my table stated ‘All guests must be approved by the cat’.

In other words, even if ‘the customer is king’, for the well-being of cats, clients cannot, for instance, bother them when they eat or feed them ‘human food’. The fact that the owners of ‘Kattencafé Op z’n kop’ do not exploit the cats like other businesses do is an aspect to be highly praised.

In what concerns my experience, I must say that I was immediately smiling from ear to ear when a grey cat and a gingery one were curiously sniffing my bag and cuddling next to my legs.

I was fortunate to even assist to one of the cats’ mealtimes and thus to see all ten of them feasting on their food.

It is needless to say that when I left, I felt recharged with good energy and so with the promise that I will visit ‘Kattencafé Op z’n kop’ in the nearest future.
